Work Experience at a Liverpool Game Developer
Q&A with Bethany Wong, Sixth Form Student at Liverpool College.
As part of our commitment to nurturing the next generation of creative talent, vTime recently welcomed a sixth form student from Liverpool College for a week of immersive work experience. With a passion for art, animation, and gacha video games she joined us to get a taste of what it’s like to work at a real games studio.
We asked her a few questions to reflect on the experience - here’s what she had to say:
What did you expect before starting the week?
I was really nervous to get started, but also excited, though I honestly didn't need to be! The people who work at this company are so incredibly friendly and welcoming! They helped me settle in very quickly and made sure I always had someone I felt comfortable talking to.
What tasks did you get involved with?
During my time at the company, I was given a wide range of tasks and roles to help me experience how a game is made. I had a go at activities in most of the departments to get a feel for what they do. I helped with a lot of things, such as giving suggestions for the narrative board, sketching layouts for some of the levels that needed adjusting, learning about production workflows, testing game audio and character dialogue, and analysing existing games - just to name a few!
What was your highlight?
Some of my absolute highlights of the week were testing the game to find any bugs or malfunctions, and coming up with concept designs for items by experimenting with different art styles and drawing them out.
What did you learn?
By experiencing new things and interacting with different people in each department, I gained a much deeper insight into the various roles involved in creating a game as a team. I’ve learned the importance of clear communication between colleagues, and I’ve developed skills that will help me in school and the workplace in the future - including problem-solving, teamwork, and creativity.
Final thoughts?
Overall, I found the experience really enjoyable and fun. It was such an honour to be welcomed as part of the team, even just for a short time! It felt especially fulfilling and productive to have the opportunity to be creative and expressive with fewer restrictions than you’d typically find in a traditional office environment.
